Captured... The Look of The Dog

Book Review: “Captured. . . The Look of the Dog”

September 7, 2014

Life is made up of stories and experiences. Many times simple and joyful, like going to the dog park and listen how other proud pet parents tell stories about their adorable dogs. After that, imagine going back home in a sunny morning and sitting at your favorite spot to drink coffee or tea with your dog at your side to read a good book, something to fuel your spirit, like "Captured… The Look of the Dog".

I received the manuscript of this awesome book. It has many stories, poems and quizzes that will melt your heart, and all of them accompanied by wonderful photography. Sisters Gloria Yarina and Fern Goodman are the authors of this book. They are both dog lovers, compassionate and interested in helping animals. That is what the book is about, stories about love and compassion mixed with humor and fun. The perfect read for a dog lover!

Look into the eyes of an animal and you will see, hear and feel a whole other language. ~F. Goodman~

Lola the show girl

Here are some excerpts from the book: Joy, Oh Boy Boy, oh boy, oh boy I bet you think I’m full of joy But I can assure you it is a lie In truth, I’m trying to cough up a fly

Older Dog, She Has My Heart

Older Dog, She Has My Heart She calmly greets me with a smile and tail a waggin.’ She mimics my moves. If I bend down, she does too. She eats and savors her food instead of in a greedy gobble. She unconditionally trusts all of her needs will be met. She snuggles just right, molds her body to mine. She understands without being given a single command. She never attempts to run out of an open door. She knows where and how to communicate her potty time.

She contentedly meanders in the backyard as I read. She follows me inside when I get up. She beds down when I am napping. She still learns new things, anxious to please. She coos lovable purring sounds when I pet her. She takes treats delicately, conscious of my fingers. She walks on a leash in stride; we are two ladies on the block. She is my constant harmonious companion. She looks up to assure me, yes, we have that special bond. She would do anything for me and I for her…she has my heart.

Wednesdays with Winnie: Playing with the Clutter

September 3, 2014

Some months ago I was organizing my home office and trashing the clutter. For Winnie was like a game. I was throwing her paper balls and she was better than a major league center fielder! We still play that game. Then she starts opening the paper ball with her paws and mouth and she breaks it in pieces. She doesn't need expensive toys! Only me and the paper to play. If we humans could always enjoy the simple things as much as our dogs… that's what we try every day.

Then she just lays down on top of the papers and stays there for a long time to take a nap. That's what my dog Camila used to do too. The pictures below are from Camila.

Does your dog like to play with paper balls? What other game you enjoy together that is not a toy from the pet store? Leave a comment! We would love to hear about it.

Pet Sitting: emailing Joy

August 30, 2014

Are you a pet sitter or do you help a friend or a neighbor to take care of the dogs some times? If you have pets, you know how it feels to go out and leave your furry kids at home. Oh! if you could only take them with you everywhere you go…

Last week, I was pet sitting a friend's dogs and I sent her a picture of them relaxing after lunch. She was so happy to receive my email! I was emailing pure joy for her (and peace of mind).

With today's smart phones it's really easy to email pictures or videos. Do you do this? Do you send pictures or videos to the dog's parents while they are at work or on vacation? If not, try it. It will be a nice way to surprise your friend or neighbor.

Dog and Cat

Wednesdays with Winnie: Winnie and the Cat

August 27, 2014

Winnie knows that every day she will go on a quest to chase cats. She gets excited because she knows all felines will run away. She loves that. Of course she is on a leash or… who knows what could happen!

I love this picture because you can feel some conversation is going on, and just a second after I shoot the photo, the cat was jumping and escaping from Winnie.

She loves to go to the “cat street”, a street behind my house where 4 or 5 cats always lay down under the sun. For Winnie is an experience, like going to the zoo and see all those animals from other species.

But some cats and dogs are good friends, look at this video!

Do you have a cat too? Does your dog get along well with his feline friends? Leave a comment and tell us about it.

National Dog Day 2014

National Dog Day 2014

August 26, 2014

Today is National Dog Day! It is one of the celebrations that excites me more : ) not only because I have a lovely furry angel (and two that are now in dog's heaven) but because dogs deserve to have a Big Celebration.

It is not only their beauty or the blast we have playing with them, it is about all the Love they give us unconditionally, the special connection we have that can't be explained with words. It is about having an angel at home who brightens your day every day or seeing someone else dog at the park giving you that look that makes you feel like hugging the 4 legged smiley friend.

But this day is also about the dogs that are not fortunate to have a family or that are abused and neglected, to make everything in our hands to stop other people to be cruel and to help doggies in need. Every little help is huge, anything we can do and the sum of small of big efforts, will make a difference.

Here are some ideas of things you can do to help:

• Organize a Dog Party and ask your friends, family and neighbors to bring their pets for treats and fun as well as food for donation to animal shelters.

• Choose one (or more) organization, national or local and donate whatever you can (one month worth of savings from coffee or snacks, the earnings of a garage or ebay sale) or if you are fortunate to have a good job, something more : )

• Share all the posts that you can about helping animals on Facebook or Twitter, social media is really powerful!

• If you are ready to commit to a long term-forever love relationship, adopt a dog! I know some friends that adopted and now their lives changed in so many and positive ways.

Post a comment and share some ideas on how we can help doggies (and other animals) in need.

These pictures are from my angels, Winnie is 12 years old.

I found these 2011 video from Thomas University about National Dog Day. Enjoy it!

Do you have dogs? What are their names? Leave a comment and tell a story about them : ) Happy National Dog Day to your Friends!
