It's party time when I go to the park and my dog and I meet other dogs. I pet them and say something nice to the owner, but the dogs? They just love to smell each other's butts!
They go round and around, like a ceremony. What are they thinking? Do they say to each other "nice to meet you"? Maybe… but there is a scientific explanation for us humans to understand why they joyfully do that.
I found a fun and interesting video from the American Chemistry Society that explains this in a very simple way: "We are getting to the bottom of one of the biggest quandaries in science: Why dogs sniff each other’s butts. Turns out this behavior is just one of many interesting forms of chemical communication in the animal kingdom. Dogs use a special feature called the Jacobsen's Organ to get chemical signals from their nose sent directly to their brain. "
Is your dog social? Does he likes when other dogs approach to smell his butt? I think it is like party time!
